One of the most critical applications of computational fluid dynamics is in the field of civil engineering, water, and hydraulic structures. The applications in the field of hydraulic structures and civil engineering include the stepped spillway overflow simulation, cylindrical and lateral overflow dams, climate models, and sedimentation.

The Design digital workshop, with several years of experience in the field of computational fluid dynamics simulation, is ready to provide services in civil engineering-related fields. Using the numerical method for designing hydraulic structure have been used from the beginning of the 21st century. The most application of CFD for this area is associated with the simulation of free surface and open channel flow, including all of the simple channel, overflows, etc. for modeling and simulation of this application, Ansys CFX and Ansys Fluent use the Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model. This model is useful when the density ratio of phases is high. In the most time phases is water and air and this ratio is near 1000 and is so high, besides, this model is also perfect when we want to calculate hydraulic level. It means the height of the water flow level. Most time, we want to calculate this parameter and find a way to control it. The second model that has much application is the Discrete Phase Model (DPM). This model is used for simulating and predicting the sedimentation performance of spillways, side channels.

There are many advantages of CFD simulation for designing hydraulic structure; for example, there is very result that can be calculated just by CFD simulation and is not possible to extract from experiment and tests. But CFD simulation has some disadvantages or in other words, has some limitations. CFD simulation accuracy in hydraulic structure entirely depends on meshing quality, size, turbulence method, and also discretization method. If we select an inappropriate method result is not acceptable, but what is promising is that if you are an expert in CFD simulation for this area or use our Specialized service, we can commit to delivering you a reliable and valid result. We can assure you that the discretization method and turbulence models are appropriate and accurate for your work. in most CFD simulations of free-surface flow, RANS turbulence models are accurate, and no need to use Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES). For knowing which method is more accurate in our work we need to have turbulence sensitivity analysis. It means to compare all turbulence methods with experimental tests and find the result of which method is closer to the experimental result. Although some times some method like Reynolds Stress Method (RSM) is more accurate in determining vortex and angle of separation, we should know the computational cost is high because we should solve 7 equation in this case. Most time, we can use k-epsilon RNG, and the realizable and accuracy of these methods are the same or a little lower. But the computational cost is very lower than RSM because the number of the equation is two.
